The art of 3D printing

The term 3D printing, widely referred to as additive manufacturing, is a family of processes that produces objects by adding material in layers that correspond to a successive cross-section of a 3D model. Plastics and metal alloys are the most commonly used materials for 3D printing, but they can nearly work on everything from concrete to living tissue. The object which is needed to be 3D printed is first modelled in CAD software with specific dimensions. Then the CAD file is sliced using slicing software. Slicers are the easiest way to go from a 3D model to a printed part because they take a CAD model, slice it into layers and turn the model into G-code. The slicer software also includes 3D printer settings like temperature, layer height, print speed, etc. to the G-code. The 3D printer can read this G-code and make the model layer by layer following the instructions set in the G-code.
